Hallucinations Treatment

 Hallucinations Overview

A number of the people I see in my Denver private practice experience visual and auditory hallucinations. Some have been struggling with hallucinations since childhood, others started hearing and seeing things during adolescence, and yet others developed these symptoms as adults.

I believe that most forms of psychosis and hallucinations develop many times in people that have a history of trauma and/or have a history of other mental health related issues such as depression.

I approach hallucinations treatment from a wellness perspective of understanding the underlying reasons and their functionality rather than a medical model that treats these issues by use of medication.

My work in this area is based on the research of British psychiatrist R.D. Laing who worked extensively in his clinic in London with people who experienced visual, auditory, and sensory hallucinations. Laing believed that people develop hallucinations during or after periods of intense stress or traumatic experiences as a defense tactic, as a way to protect themselves; this is one of the reasons why some people hear voices that tell them what to do.

I believe that hallucinations serve a purpose and have a very well defined function within that person’s life. The scope of therapy in this case is to focus on the root cause of their existence and finding alternate ways to handle stressful situations when hallucinations tend to occur most.
Below you can read a brief case study of a young adult woman who experienced visual and auditory hallucinations and the therapy treatment she received while working with me.
